Chronicling America

Kool Ade

Old school, retro picks

This week the National Endowment for the Humanities unveiled its redesigned website and with it a fresh look for Chronicling America, an online archive of historic American newspapers. As the joint project of the NEH and the Library of Congress moves forward with its goal of developing a Web-based, searchable database of U.S. newspapers with descriptive information and select digitization of historic pages, there's plenty to keep you entertained. Try keeping up with the century-old front-page news that appears prominently on the Chronicling America homepage. Lately, lurid tales of Titanic dominate: the April 20, 1912 issue of Richmond, Virginia's Times Dispatch leads with the whispered confessions of J. Bruce Ismay, managing director of the White Star Line, who escaped the doomed ship in a lifeboat while wearing pajamas.
