It's remix time in the art and architecture galleries at MoMA, and this year the curatorial staff shakes things up with Just In: Recent Acquisitions From the Collection. This new exhibit features some of the most awe-inspiring design work of the past five years. Start 2008 off fresh as you marvel at the museum's latest treasures: Watch video of Diller + Scofidio's Blur Building—created with mist—or take a closer look at 2x4's mesmerizing graphics for Vitra and Prada. Roughly 60 objects are on display through November, so you can stop by whenever the creative well needs replenishment.

Most designer lamps could win a beauty contest without breaking a sweat, but few provide the same sense of wonder as Airswitch 1. Shaped like a science-lab flask, this simple glass shade forgoes traditional switches in favor of a nearly magical touchless experience. Waving a hand over the top of the lamp turns it on and off, while moving the palm up and down controls brightness. It's simple and intuitive, but there's a small graphic cheat sheet on the lamp's side to let guests in on the fun. Wannabe magicians might turn these instructions toward the wall for impromptu tricks: Let there be light!

Snow angels are so third grade. Here's the ultimate creative challenge for snow lovers: You've got a 12-ft.-tall block of snow, three friends, a few hand tools and 65 hours. What do you make? It's the dilemma faced by teams participating in the 18th International Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge, Colo., Jan. 22–27. Last year's whimsical entries included an origami squirrel, life-size elephants and giraffes, and gorgeous abstract forms. Weather permitting, this year's 20-ton creations should remain on view through Feb. 4. (And if power tools are more your speed, read up on the art of ice sculpture in the Jan./Feb. issue of STEP inside design magazine, on newsstands now.)
