Cressida Granger and David Mulley visited Edward Craven-Walker, inventor of the psychedelic Lava Lamp, at his nudist camp in 1989. There, they acquired the rights to produce the lamp and formed their own company, Mathmos, named after the seething lake of evil slime beneath the city Sogo in the cult film “Barbarella.” They’ve launched a number of innovative lamps since including AirSwitch, a lamp that is controlled by simply moving your hand through the air above it.

After earning her MFA from SVA in NYC, Sarah Neuburger returned to Columbia, S.C., (to escape acronyms) and to establish a little cottage industry for her artwork and other small objects. Almost every day she posts a new eccentric drawing or design. Her Stick Family Portraits (made of wooden tongue depressors) and Little Small Clothespin People are both big hits. As is her “Thumb War Battle of 1496” which she documents on archival paper.

Move over J.Lo—S.Moy’s in town. Spencer Moy, the industrial designer of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is hitting the neighborhood blocks and runways with his cool Photo Cuff. It’s a simple yet stylish canvas worn around the wrist; it holds the wearer’s favorite photos and Page Six clippings. In J.Lo's case, depending on her boyfriend or husband of the moment, she can change the pictures as often as she likes. Smoys are available in one- or four-window cuffs.
