Industrial designer Ron Gilad moved from Israel to New York in 2001, and since then has cofounded a curious test lab for “domestic objects” called Designfenzider. If you associate the word bowl with circle, think again. His “Fruit Bowls” tend to be four-sided; resembling something like miniature boxing rings for bruised pears and apples. He’s designed a painted metal fence around the fruit to keep it from slipping off its square birch pedestal. Certainly a conversation piece.

Old Guys Rule, the Ventura, Calif., surfing clothing retailer, continues to celebrate the accomplishments of “lives well spent, but not nearly over” with its first e-commerce site to sell its totally rad collection of T-shirts. First popularized by surfers on the beaches of Southern California in the ’60s and ’70s, Old Guys Rule designs have now grown to include fishing, barbecuing, classic cars, rodeo, mowing the lawn, and even watching TV. The site was designed by 3 Advertising of Albuquerque, N.M.

What started a few years ago with some white underpants and a Bedazzler has now become a full-blown retail business, specializing in handprinted and handcrafted cards, notes, invites, and baby tees. Working out of a closet in their Koreatown apartment in L.A., Sidepony is a family operation. Kimberly Dawn Robertson crafts the goods, her daughter Estella models the wears, and boyfriend Chris takes care of the behind the scenes business.
