During high school detention, while playing (quietly) with a flexible toy pen, shaping it into a more comfortable way to write, Colin Roche had his first vision as an inventor. He ran home, pulled out his father’s soldering iron, and emerged with the first working prototype of the PenAgain. Now 10 years later, he’s patented the wishbone-looking thing. Not only does it relieve the tension in your hand while writing, but it also has a cool streamlined ergonomic look to it.

After trying many methods of carrying her three wee ones—her “little monkeys”—through the tangled rainforest of her home in British Columbia, Sandrine Contant discovered the baby sling. She took the concept of its mobility and functionality, found fabric, and color to suit her style and now makes her own. Available in three categories of designs: funky (camouflage), patterned (earth tones), and classic (solid colors). Website designed by Sacha Loughton of DotDot Design.

Hey diddle diddle! It’s the cat with the fiddle! And the flute. And the trombone. And the accordion. Okay, so she may have gotten carried away with the Mother Goose nursery rhyme but they sure are cute. Clair Boomer of Oakland, Calif. embroiders colorful kittens, standing tall on their hind legs playing a number of musical instruments, onto 100-percent cotton tote bags. Inspired by her assistants—her cats, Yoshi and Tuco. Next: silk screened T-shirts and buttons.
